Liposuction at Lipology Clinic
WHAT IS LIPOSUCTION?
Liposuction, also known as liposculpture, is a surgical treatment in which excess fatty tissue is permanently removed using a thin cannula (suction tube). Through small incisions, stubborn fat that will not disappear with diet or exercise can be suctioned out. The goal of liposuction is not weight loss, but to improve body contours and create a more beautiful, balanced silhouette.
Liposuction can be applied to different areas, such as the abdomen, hips, legs, arms, buttocks, chin and neck. At Lipology Clinic, we work with the most advanced and safe technique: tumescent liposuction under local anesthesia. This method allows us to carefully and lymph-sparingly remove fat, with smooth results, minimal recovery time and a natural effect.
In short, liposuction is the solution for people who suffer from localized fat deposits and want to permanently improve their body shape.
Where can liposuction be applied?
Liposuction can be applied to almost all areas of the body where fat deposits occur. Commonly treated areas are:
At Lipology Clinic, we treat all areas and always ensure symmetry and a harmonious result that suits your body.

WHY TUMESCENT LIPOSUCTION?
Tumescent liposuction is an advanced technique, performed entirely under local anesthesia is performed. This involves the injection of a great deal of anesthetic fluid into the area to be treated, causing the fat tissue to firm up and soften the fat, so to speak. This allows the fat to be removed more safely, easily, beautifully and with less tissue damage. To further refine the treatment, at Lipology we use thin vibrating (vibrating) suction tubes (cannulas). This also makes the treatment suitable for lipedema.

WHY LIPOSUCTION UNDER LOCAL ANESTHESIA?
Tumescent liposuction has many advantages over traditional liposuction.
Safest technique(1):
Partly because the treatment is performed under only local anesthesia, the risk of serious physical complications is virtually zero (in our team in > 5000 treatments have not yet occurred).
More beautiful results (sculpting):
The tumescent fluid enlarges and evens out the treatment area, allowing the doctor to work much more precisely. Also, local anesthesia allows patients to change positions during treatment. As a result, more beautiful, even results can be achieved.
Faster recovery:
Because less damage is done to the tissue and only local anesthesia is used, recovery after tumescent liposuction is generally faster and less painful. Patients can go home the same day and resume their daily activities within a few days.
Lifting effect/ skin tightening:
due to the injected fluid and the use of thin vibrating cannulas, the connection of the skin to the muscle is not damaged. This prevents the skin from sagging. In addition, the tissue is activated which causes the skin to contract even more (elevator).
A skin correction is therefore rarely necessary with tumescent liposuction.

HOW TO RECOGNIZE THE BEST (REAL TUMESCENCE) TREATMENT?
To perform liposuction painlessly, anesthesia is, of course, necessary. There are several methods for this. For example, you can go into full anesthesia, receive an epidural or anesthesia through an IV, or only be numbed locally (local anesthesia).
Scientific research shows that liposuction treatment under anesthesia has greater risks than local anesthesia alone (1).
In other words, the more awake and mobile the patient is during treatment, the safer. Thereby, you also get nicer results if a patient is mobile and can assume different positions during the treatment.
At Lipology Clinic, this is one of the reasons why we very consciously choose the advanced tumescent liposuction method; in which the fat is removed under only local anesthesia.
WHAT ARE NEW TECHNOLOGIES IN LIPOSUCTION?
Several new liposuction techniques have been developed in recent years, often presented as innovative and promising. Consider, for example:
These techniques sound innovative, but the scientific evidence for better or safer results is limited. Indeed, some methods actually carry additional risks, such as burns, scarring or damage to surrounding tissue.
Therefore, at Lipology Clinic, we deliberately choose tumescent liposuction with fine vibrating micro-canulas. This is the most researched, proven safe and effective method. This technique offers smooth and natural results, minimal tissue damage, shorter recovery time and additional skin tightening, without the risks of laser or ultrasound.
In short, new technologies may seem interesting, but tumescent liposuction remains the gold standard for safe and beautiful results.
You can read honest information about the pros and cons of additional technologies in liposuction and why Lipology Clinic only uses vibrating micro cannulas here.
CAN TUMESCENT LIPOSUCTION FOR OBESITY?
Yes, in many cases, tumescent liposuction is also possible in overweight people. Because this method is performed under only local anesthesia (without anesthesia), the conditions to be treated are less strict than with traditional liposuction under anesthesia. Even patients with a BMI over 30 can sometimes be safely treated, provided that medical history, condition and any medication allow it. This is always carefully assessed during the intake interview.
However, it is important to note that liposuction is not a weight-loss method. The goal of the treatment is contour improvement: the removal of stubborn fat deposits that do not disappear through diet or exercise. So liposuction does not provide major weight loss, but it does improve body shape and comfort.
The treatment is most effective in people who are already close to their healthy weight but still have specific problem areas, such as abdomen, hips, thighs, arms or knees. In more overweight patients, liposuction can still make a big difference in reducing symptoms, improving mobility and experiencing more self-confidence.
During a personal consultation, we always discuss whether tumescent liposuction is right for you and what you can realistically expect from the results.
CAN YOU ALSO REMOVE FAT WITHOUT SURGERY?
Yes, there are several treatments today that are presented as alternatives to liposuction, removing fat without surgery. These techniques fall under the collective term lipolysis and aim to damage or break down fat cells. Examples include:
While these methods sound appealing because they are nonsurgical, they also have obvious limitations. The results are usually much less effective and predictable than with liposuction. At best, they are suitable for treating very small fat deposits, such as under the chin or a small roll near the abdomen. For larger areas, such as abdomen, legs, hips or arms, liposuction is by far the most reliable and permanent solution.
In addition, these nonoperative treatments also carry risks, such as burns (with cryolipolysis), hard hump formation, skin irritation or allergic reactions. Effectiveness varies greatly from person to person and often multiple sessions are required with limited visible improvement.
This is why liposuction with the tumescent technique is still considered the gold standard: safe, predictable and with lasting results.
AM I NOT ALREADY TOO OLD FOR LIPOSUCTION?
There is no strict age limit for liposuction. Even later in life, tumescent liposuction can be a safe and effective treatment provided you are in good health. The most important condition is that you are fit enough for the procedure and have no medical contraindications.
In older patients, there is often the question of whether the skin still has sufficient retraction after the removal of fat. Although skin elasticity decreases somewhat with age, we see that the skin can often recover surprisingly well even in old age. Thanks to the tumescent technique, which uses thin vibrating cannulas and preserves the skin structure, a natural lifting effect also occurs. Because of this, an additional skin correction is not necessary in most cases.
Safety always comes first. If you use medication or are under treatment by a specialist, we will coordinate this carefully. During the consultation we will discuss in detail what to expect, including examples and results from patients in a similar age group.
In short, even if you are older, you don’t have to resign yourself to complaints or contours you are uncomfortable with. With proper technique and medical guidance, liposuction in old age is safe and effective.
Who is liposuction suitable for?
Liposuction is appropriate for people with stubborn fat deposits that do not disappear despite healthy diet, exercise or weight loss. These are often problem areas such as abdomen, hips, thighs, arms or double chin, where fat is genetically or hormonally attached. Liposuction is not a method to lose weight, but an effective treatment to improve body contours and make the figure more balanced.
At Lipology Clinic, we carefully assess whether you are a suitable candidate for tumescent liposuction during an intake. In doing so, we look not only at the fatty tissue, but also at skin elasticity, general health and your personal wishes. This allows us to create a safe and realistic treatment plan that suits your body.
What are the main benefits of liposuction?
The benefits of liposuction go beyond simply removing fat. The most commonly mentioned benefits are:
At Lipology Clinic, we combine medical expertise with the safest technique (tumescent liposuction), achieving lasting results with minimal risk.
Can liposuction be combined with other treatments?
Yes, in some cases liposuction can be combined with additional treatments to achieve optimal results. Examples include:
Which combination is suitable depends entirely on your personal situation and wishes. During the consultation, we discuss the options in detail and create a customized treatment plan.
What is lipofilling and can it be combined with liposuction?
Yes, liposuction can be excellently combined with lipofilling. In lipofilling, the fat removed during liposuction is returned to another part of the body after special processing, such as the buttocks, breasts or face. This makes it possible to both remove fat in troublesome areas and add volume where desired in a single treatment.
The great advantage of lipofilling is that no implants or artificial materials are needed: we use your own fat, which ensures a natural and long-lasting result. Lipofilling is often used for modest augmentation of the breasts, buttocks or to fill blemishes or scarring.
At Lipology Clinic, we always discuss during the consultation whether liposuction can be combined with lipofilling and whether it suits your needs and physique.
Treatment & technique
How does liposuction treatment proceed?
Liposuction treatment at Lipology Clinic always follows a careful step-by-step plan and is performed using the tumescent liposuction technique under local anesthesia. This makes the treatment safer, less stressful and gives more beautiful results.
Step-by-step course of liposuction:
Why is this method unique?
You can read more about the course of treatment and recovery here.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS?
Tumescent liposuction is known worldwide as the safest form of liposuction. Because the treatment is done under local anesthesia, the risks are many times lower than liposuction under anesthesia. Serious complications are very rare and have never occurred in our team, with thousands of treatments experience.
As with any medical procedure, temporary side effects may occur, such as:
Thanks to our protocol, including preventive starting with a short course of antibiotics, the risk of infection is minimal. During the intake interview, we discuss all possible risks in detail so that you are well prepared.
During the informational interview, all side effects and risks will be discussed with you again in detail. Also watch our video about the safety of our treatment.
What technique does Lipology Clinic use?
At Lipology Clinic, we work exclusively with the advanced tumescent liposuction technique. This involves the introduction of anesthetic fluid into the treatment area, which loosens the fatty tissue and allows it to be safely removed. We additionally use ultra-thin, vibrating micro cannulas that allow us to remove the fat with extreme precision, with minimal tissue damage. This provides:
Is liposuction painful?
During the treatment, you won’t feel any pain thanks to local anesthesia. You remain awake and can even watch or change positions, which helps to optimize contouring. Should any areas be painful, we can additionally anesthetize throughout the treatment.
Afterwards, you may experience mild tenderness, often described as muscle pain or soreness. Most clients report that this discomfort is well tolerated and usually subsides within a few days. For this, we recommend the use of paracetamol for the first few days after liposucite.
How long does liposuction treatment take?
The duration of treatment depends in part on the area being treated. On average, the liposuction itself takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. Including preparation, anesthesia induction time and aftercare, you are usually in our clinic for half a day.
Recovery & aftercare
Recovery after liposuction: how does it happen and what should you consider?
Recovery after liposuction is smooth for most clients, especially when the procedure was performed using the tumescent technique. Because this uses only local anesthesia and involves virtually no tissue damage, recovery time is often shorter than with traditional liposuction under anesthesia.
How long does recovery take?
Can you retain fluid after liposuction?
Yes, fluid accumulation and swelling are normal reactions of the body after liposuction. In the first few days this is due to the anesthetic fluid, then wound fluid. This is temporary and largely disappears in the first few weeks. With tumescent liposuction there is no permanent damage to blood or lymph vessels, so that the fluid is drained away by itself. This makes this technique particularly suitable for people with lipedema.
How long should you wear a pressure suit after liposuction?
To support the recovery process, you will be fitted with a pressure suit after treatment:
When can I have a massage after liposuction?
After liposuction, swelling always occurs due to wound fluid and the insertion of the tumescent fluid. To support this recovery process, you will wear a pressure suit day and night for the first 2 weeks.
Some clients choose to additionally undergo manual lymph drainage (massage by a specialized edema therapist). This massage can help to:
Massage is usually possible from 1 to 2 weeks after liposuction, once the initial sensitivity has subsided. Important to know: massage is not a requirement for a good end result. Wearing the pressure suit in combination with sufficient exercise is already sufficient for a successful recovery. Above all, massage can make the process more comfortable.
When can I return to work after liposuction?
How soon you can return to work after liposuction depends on the type of work and your personal recovery. Thanks to the tumescent technique, recovery is usually smooth. The guidelines are:
The important thing is to listen carefully to your body. In principle, you cannot “break” anything by being active too quickly, but the body will automatically tell you when you are doing too much. Our doctors always give personal advice during the consultation, tailored to your work and lifestyle.
Should I wear pressure garments after liposuction?
Yes, after liposuction, wearing a pressure or compression suit is essential for proper recovery. The compression suit:
With tumescent liposuction, we recommend wearing the pressure suit day and night for at least 2 weeks. This is shorter than traditional liposuction (which often requires 6 weeks) because the tumescent technique causes less tissue damage. Some clients choose to wear the suit even longer, such as during the day, as this provides additional comfort during recovery.
What are the risks and complications of liposuction?
Tumescent liposuction is known as the safest liposuction technique and is performed completely under local anesthesia. As a result, the risks are many times lower than with treatments under anesthesia. Still, as with any surgical procedure, temporary side effects may occur, such as:
Serious complications such as infections are very rare. At Lipology Clinic, we start a short course of antibiotics preventively to further reduce the risk. During the consultation, we discuss in detail all possible side effects so that you are well prepared.
How soon can I return to sports or heavy lifting after liposuction?
The rate of recovery varies from person to person, but thanks to the tumescent technique, it is usually fast. The guidelines are:
Important: Listening to your body is paramount. Doing too much too soon can delay recovery, but you cannot “break” anything. During the intake you will receive personalized recovery advice, tailored to your situation and lifestyle.
Results and expectations
When will I see results from liposuction?
Many patients see a change in body contours immediately after treatment. Still, you must allow for a natural recovery process. The first few weeks there will still be swelling, bruising and wound fluid, so the results are not yet definitively visible.
At Lipology Clinic, we guide you through this process intensively, so you know what to expect at what point.
How many pounds of fat are removed with liposuction?
A frequently asked question is how many pounds will you lose weight through liposuction. It is important to know that liposuction is not a weight-loss method, but a treatment aimed at improving body contours.
During the procedure, fat is removed in liters (fat tissue and fluid), not pounds. How much that is depends on:
In most cases, we remove as much fat as possible within safe limits, but you won’t always see this reflected directly on the scale. Instead, you’ll notice the big difference in your body shape, clothing size and silhouette.
DOES THE SKIN GO SAGGY AFTER LIPOSUCTION?
No, not with tumescent liposuction with vibrating thin suction cannulas, as applied at Lipology Clinic. One of the major advantages of this liposuction technique is that there is skin tightening occurs. A skin correction is therefore rarely necessary.
How much the skin can retract depends on the situation before treatment. This will be discussed with you in detail during a consultation.
DOES FAT COME BACK IN OTHER PLACES AFTER LIPOSUCTION?
That fat comes back in other places after liposuction is something that is said a lot in the corridors. It’s a very interesting question, one that cannot be answered in a few sentences.
Very briefly, the answer is: if people maintain a stable weight after treatment, we see no evidence in practice that liposuction leads to marked fat gain in other areas.
Read here a detailed explanation of fat distribution after liposuction
How much the skin can retract depends on the situation before treatment. This will be discussed with you in detail during a consultation.
Are the results of liposuction permanent?
Yes, the result of liposuction is basically permanent, because the removed fat cells do not return. This is because your body does not produce new fat cells. However, the remaining fat cells can grow larger if you gain a lot of weight in the future. It is therefore important to maintain a healthy lifestyle with good nutrition and sufficient exercise, so that you can benefit from the results for as long as possible.
At Lipology Clinic, we see clients who maintain a stable lifestyle enjoy a slimmer, better proportioned body for years to come.
How natural does the result of liposuction look?
A common concern is whether liposuction gives an unnatural or “indented” appearance. At Lipology Clinic, we work with tumescent liposuction and vibrating micro-canulas, which allow us to sculpt very precisely. As a result, the new contours fit your body harmoniously. No hard edges or dents, but rather smooth lines that fit your natural physique.
During the intake we discuss your needs and expectations in detail, so that the end result looks both beautiful and natural.
Can blemishes appear after liposuction?
In rare cases, slight blemishes or asymmetries may occur, for example, because the body still retains fluid during recovery or because the skin reacts differently to the healing process. However, thanks to our experience and precision technique at Lipology Clinic, this risk is minimal.
Should there still be a small irregularity, this can often be easily corrected with additional treatment or aftercare. Our goal is always a smooth, symmetrical and durable result.
Cost & reimbursement
What does liposuction at Lipology Clinic cost?
The cost of liposuction at Lipology Clinic depends on several factors, such as the area being treated, the extent of the treatment and the complexity of the procedure. Our prices are always “all-in,” meaning they include intake, the treatment itself, anesthesia, aftercare and checkups afterwards. There are no unexpected additional costs.
On average, rates are between €2,500 and €6,500 per treatment, depending on the area(s). Larger treatment areas, such as the entire legs (e.g., lip edema), often require multiple sessions to work safely.
A listing of all current rates can be found on our rates page. During the consultation, the doctor will discuss your wishes and we will draw up a personal treatment plan with a clear price quotation.
Is liposuction covered by health insurance?
Unfortunately, liposuction, even for lipedema, is uninsured care. Therefore, requesting an “authorization” by the physician, as is often advised to lipedema patients by the health insurance company over the phone, is pointless. Indeed, the doctor’s request will ultimately be rejected by the health insurer based on the opinion of the Dutch Health Care Institute (ZiN).
Liposuction for Lipedema
Is liposuction appropriate for lipedema?
Yes, liposuction is a proven effective treatment for lipedema and is recognized worldwide as the only method to actually remove abnormal lipedema fat. Especially when treated at a relatively early stage, liposuction can significantly reduce symptoms such as pain, heaviness and fatigue. At Lipology Clinic, we exclusively apply the lymph-sparing tumescent liposuction technique. This method is safe, performed under local anesthesia and protects the lymph vessels, minimizing complications.
How is liposuction for lipedema different from cosmetic liposuction?
Although the technique is largely the same, the goal of liposuction for lipedema differs greatly from cosmetic liposuction. In cosmetic surgery, the emphasis is on aesthetics and improving body contours. With lip edema, on the other hand, the main focus is on reducing pain and pressure sensitivity, improving mobility and stopping the progression of the disease. The aesthetic result, such as slimmer legs or arms, is an important but secondary benefit. Lipology Clinic has extensive experience in this and works entirely according to the Dutch lipedema guideline, so that both the medical complaints and the aesthetics are addressed.
How many treatments are needed for lip edema?
The number of lip edema treatments needed varies from patient to patient and depends on factors such as the stage of lip edema, the severity of symptoms and the areas to be treated (for example, legs, arms or hips). It often takes several sessions to treat the entire affected area, as only a safe amount of fat can be removed per session. On average, extensive lipedema cases require 2 to 5 treatments for optimal functional and aesthetic results. During the intake consultation, our doctors will create a personalized treatment plan in which this is carefully discussed.
Can I choose an all-female treatment team?
Yes, at Lipology Clinic it is possible to be treated by an all-female treatment team. Many women experience this as pleasant, especially in treatments of intimate areas such as legs, buttocks or abdomen. Our team consists of experienced female doctors and nurses who specialize in liposuction and lipedema care.
Would you like to be treated by a female team? If so, please indicate this when booking a consultation so we can include this in your treatment plan.

Patients choose Lipology Clinic because we are the specialist in tumescent liposuction under local anesthesia, the safest and most sophisticated technique worldwide. In addition, we distinguish ourselves in several ways:
In short, at Lipology Clinic you choose safety, expertise and a natural result that you can enjoy for years.
Liposuction, also known as liposculpture, is an effective method of removing stubborn fat deposits and improving body contours. It is not intended as a slimming method, but as a targeted treatment for areas where fat does not disappear despite healthy diet and exercise.
At Lipology Clinic, we work exclusively with the tumescent liposuction technique: the safest and most refined form of liposuction. This involves first filling the treatment area with a special fluid that contains anesthetic.
This makes the fat firm (“tumescent”), making it:
In addition to aesthetic applications, such as refining the abdomen, legs, arms or chin, tumescent liposuction is also a proven effective treatment for lipedema, a chronic fat distribution disorder.
With more than 15 years of experience and thousands of treatments, Lipology Clinic is the specialist in the Netherlands in the field of tumescent liposuction.
